Super Chaos Kaizo: Survival
Last Updated March 4th, 2025. This ruleset is a work-in-progress. Check back frequently for updates. Feedback welcome!
Work-in-Progress
These rules are constantly being changed and updated as I get more people to help me test, re-write, reformat and adjust the rules to make this challenge work. At the time of writing, the ruleset is v3.1.0. Stay tuned for more updates!
What is this ruleset?
Super Chaos Kaizo: Survival is a custom challenge ruleset created by Emerald_Void, inspired by Kaizo, Survival, Super Kaizo, and Chaos Kaizo rulesets, with additional twists to maximize randomness and difficulty. It embraces pure chaos, making for a challenging yet entertaining experience.
Using this ruleset, you can generate what are known as Chaos Seeds when playing on stream.
What Are Chaos Seeds?
Chaos Seeds are special randomized runs where everything is randomized—items, moves, abilities, Pokémon typings, and more. If it can be randomized, it will be. This makes for an unpredictable and often hilarious challenge.
Chaos Seeds are meant to be fun, goofy, and incredibly difficult.
Randomizer Settings
At the time of the initial writing of this ruleset, I am only providing settings strings for Pokémon Emerald and FireRed/LeafGreen. There is no particular rhyme or reason for this other than wanting to use the Nat Dex ROM hack for each due the variety of pokemon.
FireRed / LeafGreen / Ruby / Emerald / Sapphire:

What You'll Need
Base Ruleset
This challenge is a mixture of a variety of Kaizo rules. The main set of rules used is UTDZac's Chaos Ironmon ruleset with the following additions and variations.
- Nemesis Clause:
- Pick one Pokémon as your nemesis
- Once per run, you may kill it if you see it in the wild
- You may never catch your nemesis
- If your nemesis appears in the Lab, you must pick the Pokémon that would fight it (unless a favorite is available)
- A Pokémon evolving into your nemesis is allowed
- If both other starters are banned, you must take your nemesis
- Trainers Have Smart AI:
- Trainers use improved AI logic
- Boss Trainers and Gym Leaders have held items ("Sensible Items" setting)
- Gym Leaders have 6 Pokémon
- Start off Shopping: You can buy 20 Potions anytime before entering the first gym, after that the normal IronMON shopping rules apply. You will have to find and sell any items possible to afford these. If you complete the first gym, you cannot buy any more potions.
- Pokemon Evolve Every Level: Pokémon will evolve randomly every level.
Optional Rules:
If you're looking for even more chaos and difficulty, you can add the following rules:
- Trainer Gauntlet: If a route has multiple Trainers, you must fight every one of them before healing.
- If you enter a dungeon/cave, you must defeat every trainer inside before exiting or healing at a Pokémon Center.
- Exceptions:
- You can leave to use an HM or required progression (e.g., leaving Rock Tunnel to get Flash), but you cannot heal outside before completing the gauntlet.
- If a dungeon has an automatic heal event you must skip it until all trainers are defeated (unless it is mandatory).
- No Free Healthcare: You must discard an extra item every time you heal at a Pokémon Center.
- Fickle Fortune: Everytime you pick up an item, flip a coin (or use a random number generator)
- Heads: You can keep it.
- Tails: You must immediately discard it.
- The Silent Assassin: If you use a healing item in battle, you must skip your next healing item usage—in or out of battle.
Double Rules
In the Double variant, every battle is a doubles battle (2v2). These rules follow the Chaos Kaizo and Super Chaos Kaizo: Survival rules, with the addition of the following changes:
- Double Battles Only: All trainer battles must be doubles battles (2v2). If either of your two Pokémon faints, it’s game over and the run ends.
- Pivoting: You may pivot twice per route, instead of once. This includes pivoting to the same Pokémon a second time.
- Distinct Pokémon: Both of your Pokémon must be different. However, if evolving a Pokémon results in having two of the same Pokémon, that is allowed and bypasses this rule.
- Shared Moves: If both Pokémon share the same move, you cannot use that move for either of them. If one Pokémon learns a new move and the shared move is forgotten, you may then use it on the other Pokémon.
- Example: If both Pokémon have Water Spout, neither can use it until one of them forgets it.
- Banned Move: The move Dark Void is banned for double battles.
